Teachers within the English Department strive to motivate, inspire and challenge pupils at all levels. Years 7 to 9Pupils develop both Language skills and analysis of Literature from Years 7 to 9. In the study of Language, emphasis is placed on the basics of grammar, punctuation and spelling. All pupils are encouraged to explore different styles in their own creative written tasks.In their study of Literature, pupils explore a wide variety of non-fiction texts, with close reference to media and the moving image. The Literature syllabus includes Shakespeare, 19th and 20th Century Poetry, modern play scripts and a range of novels and short story collections. GCSE English Language and LiteratureExamination Board: AQAAll pupils are entered for both GCSE English Language and Literature. The GCSE syllabus requires pupils to submit five written coursework pieces in addition to the three written papers completed as part of their terminal examinations. Pupils are also required to take a Speaking and Listening component, which assesses their ability to express their ideas coherently within a group environment. Visits and Extra-Curricular ActivitiesThe English Department organizes trips to such events as live poetry readings and West End theatre productions. An after-school Literature Club is also offered every week so that pupils of all ages may explore further aspects of the written word.
